Hungary on the maps
27. Schedius Lajos—Blaschnek Sámuel: Magyar ország, Horvát, Tót, Dalmát és Erdély országok’, ... Pest. 1847.
This map is based on Lipszky’s Mappa generalis regni Hungariae … (24) and was popular in the first half of the nineteenth century, to judge from two editions within a short period. In drawing this map Schedius found himself on a collision course with the censors, for in the second section of the first edition of the map he showed Galicia in such detail as he elsewhere accorded only to provinces of Hungary. The censors confiscated these sections and the imprimatur was given only on condition the desired changes were made. The title page had, however, already been printed and Schedius resolved the problem by having the following text engraved on it (in German as well as Hungarian): “Dedicated by the publishers with the utmost devotion to Ferdinand, His Imperial, Royal and Apostolic Majesty, glorious reigning Emperor of Austria, King of Hungary etc. 1833-1838.” (This version was made solely for the Imperial court!). The unusually delicate relief shading on the map, by Sámuel Blaschnek, makes it possible for the unprecedently large number of place-names on it to be read without difficulty. There being no map showing greater detail available mid-century, this was the one used for military purposes during the Hungarian War of Independence of 1848-49.
