At the time of this map, forest covered some 27% of Hungarian territory. The systematic conservation and renewal of the country’s forests could not, however, get under way until the Forestation Law of 1880, though Law 31 of 1879 already provided an administrative framework. At about this time Hungary’s National Forestation Fund and the Timber Foundation were also established.
