Hungary on the maps
5. Fundanus, Nicander Philippus: Nova et exactissima totius Ungariae … Róma. 1595.
After protracted negotiations in Vienna an anti-Ottoman pact between Zsigmond Báthori, prince of Transylvania, and Rudolf I, king of Hungary, was finally agreed in 1595. In this war the armies under Báthori triumphed overwhelmingly against the forces of the Sultan at Gyurgyevo (Giurgiu, Wallachia) on 29 October 1595.
For a moment it seemed that it might be possible to chase the Ottoman Empire out of the heart of Europe, but this was not to happen for almost another century. Thanks to this triumph a number of maps were published, among them those of theologian and philosopher Nicander Philippus Fundanus, originally from the Netherlands but resident in Rome, whose map of Hungary is extremely rare. The upper left part of his map features a conspectus of the coats-of-arms of Sicily, Castile, Leon, Aragon, and the Kingdom of Naples, amongst others.
